Elements of design in fashion

The elements of design in fashion designing refers to point, line, shape, form, space, colour, pattern and texture. One of the most important part of designing, it is these elements that constitute the essence of making any product or costume look appealing. After all, what would a garment be without a proper shape and fit? And how would it be part of fashion if not catching the eye with detailing of colour, pattern and texture? These are the basic ingredients that would eventually make for a visually appealing dish that would have the benefit of taste too.
The Elements of Design are a major part of every fashion designing curriculum. Students learn Design Elements to gain knowledge about what looks good with what and how. Each design has to have a certain shape and pattern. From sketching to bringing it into practical application of drawing on cloth, cutting, and then sewing, the process of making a garment is a lengthy one.

In any design element, the concept of line can be explained as something that is used to define shape, contours and outlines. Line characteristics would use the elements of width, length, direction, focus, and feeling. From thick, thin and tapering, to long, short, continuous and broken, lines lend the first form to any Design. Lines could also be horizontal, vertical, parallel, perpendicular, diagonal, zig-zag or curved and yet have a great impact on design. Lines describe the shape of an object and capture the impression in any and every drawing. They are the initial step in a design towards giving shape to a sketch. Shapes can range from being round, square, rectangle, to uneven, irregular and free flowing. This element of design begins to give form to a drawing.

The importance of design elements lies in the fact that they are basic to achieving the right balance. The elements of design are required to form an art work and are therefore imperative to every form of designing.

At the FDDI School of Fashion Design, students are taught the elements of design as part of their course content. In this four year programmed, they learn to produce patterns and construct garments with the help of design elements’ skill and knowledge. They are exposed to advanced technical insights in various design spheres and come out to be fashion design professionals armed with a degree and thorough knowledge.
